The most crucial factor is the battery life, and that can be hard to estimate until you get your hands on the device. So, I created a simple procedure which will allow users to quickly estimate the battery life of any laptop or 2-in-1 they may own.
More than one person has asked me this question recently, which is why I decided to write this post. After all, I’ve tried many different methods to track the battery life of my laptop, with varying degrees of success. So, if you’re looking for a way to calculate how long your computer will last on a single charge, this post is for you.
It is very useful to know how to estimate the battery life of a laptop without actually using it. Especially when you buy a new laptop. You can also use this estimation formula to determine the battery life of your laptop if you already have one. To be fair, manufacturers like to exaggerate the battery life of their laptops. Knowing this will give you an idea of what to expect from your laptop in terms of battery life. As the saying goes: You have to be warned to be armed.
What are the cells in a laptop battery?
If you are one of those people who looks closely at the specifications of a laptop, you will definitely come across the specifications of the battery. The specifications of the battery can be 42 wHr 3 cells or 66 wHr 4 cells. It depends on the laptop manufacturer, some laptops even have batteries with 6, 9 or 12 cells. The cells are essentially pairs of batteries, like AA batteries, that are connected in series to form a laptop battery. So a three cell battery for a laptop is just three pairs of batteries connected in series. The same goes for a 4-cell laptop battery. Message: The wHr/mWh/mAH data refers to the entire laptop battery, not individual cells. Conclusion: The more cells in a laptop battery, the longer the battery life. Two laptop batteries; one has 3 42wh cells and the other has 4 42wh cells. The 42 wHr 4 cells will last longer than the 42 wHr 3 cells.

The watt-hour (wHr), milliwatt-hour (mWh) and milliamp-hour (mAH) are measures of electrical consumption. In the case of a laptop battery, this is the capacity of the battery. The maximum amount of energy that can be stored and released in one hour. For example, a 42 watt-hour laptop battery can deliver up to 42 watts for one hour before running out of power. Replace wHr with mAH
Let’s say you have a 42 WHr 3-cell laptop battery and you want to change the capacity to mAH. The formula is (wHr * 1000)/V, where V is the voltage of the laptop battery. The voltage of my laptop is 15.7 V. (42*1000)/15.8 = 2658 mAh
mAh replaced by Wh
Use the formula (mAH*V)/1000, where V is the voltage of the laptop battery. (2658*15.8)/1000 = 42wHr
Replace mWh by Wh
If you divide mWh by 1000, you get Wh. If you multiply a watt-hour by 1000, you get mWh.
To check the laptop battery voltage
Manufacturers do not indicate the voltage of the laptop battery in the specifications. One way to find out the voltage is to open the laptop and read the voltage on the battery. The other way is the software. BatteryInfoView is an excellent program that not only displays the battery voltage, but other information as well. You can use this information to determine the health of your battery. As shown in the figure above, my battery voltage is about 15.8V. The total charge capacity and the estimated capacity also indicate how much energy a battery can hold. For new laptops, the full charge capacity always corresponds to the calculated capacity. The rated capacity indicates the capacity or power the battery should have. Full charge capacity is the amount of energy your battery can currently hold. Note that the capacity of a full charge always decreases with time. The lower this value, the shorter the battery life of the laptop. When it reaches zero, your battery can no longer hold any power.

Every task you perform on your laptop consumes a certain amount of energy. The power consumption for normal web browsing will be much lower than for gaming. Below is the range of wattage consumption for common activities.
- 60-max: heavy games, video playback
- 40-60 W: easy game
- 30-40 W : Video or photo editing
- 20-30 W : Watch HD video online
- 15-20 W : Watch HD video offline or use multiple applications
- 10-15 W : Normal use, e.g. B. Browsing the web (not too many tabs), editing text or playing music
- 8-10 W: Minimum power when screen is on
This is only an estimate, it may be higher or lower. Still, it’s a good starting point for evaluating a laptop’s battery life.
How do I determine the battery life when buying a new laptop?
There are three ways to determine battery life when buying a laptop. They look at YouTube reviews, read opinions and calculate battery life. The first two are accurate, and the last is not really accurate, but rather an estimate. To estimate the battery life of your new laptop, you need to know the battery capacity. Once you have this value, divide the battery capacity by the power consumption while using the laptop. Only the remaining hours or the battery life are displayed. *Battery life (hours of operation) = battery capacity / battery discharge. For example, the Dell XPS 13’s battery has a capacity of 52 Wh. When you use it normally, it uses 10 to 15 watts. Battery life will be on the order of 3 to 5 hours. As you can see, this is incorrect. Dell XPS 13 laptops are known for having the best battery life, averaging 8-11 hours. Remember! This is only an estimate and it is not accurate. If you already have a laptop, how do you check the battery life? Because batteries deteriorate over time, your laptop’s battery will not perform as well as when it was new. Over time, the battery gradually loses capacity, reducing the amount of energy stored. Here are two ways to check the current battery capacity.
